If you have an Rh-negative blood type, it is important to know that it is extremely rare in the Philippines. This includes the following blood types:
A negative
B negative
AB negative
Because Rh-negative blood is uncommon among the local population, hospitals may struggle to find compatible donors in an emergency. The U.S. Embassy frequently receives urgent requests from Americans in need of Rh-negative blood for life-saving transfusions. Unfortunately, in many cases, local hospitals are unable to locate a donor.
To help prepare for this challenge, consider taking the following steps:
· Research Hospitals & Clinics: Some medical facilities are better equipped than others to handle emergency transfusions for rare blood types. Identify hospitals that may have Rh-negative blood available.
· Consider Blood Donation: If you have Rh-negative blood, donating can help build a supply for yourself and others in need. Local blood banks often rely on donors to maintain rare blood types.
· Carry Medical Information: A medical alert card or bracelet identifying your blood type can help doctors act quickly in an emergency.
· Build a Support Network: Some expat communities and organizations maintain lists of potential blood donors. Connecting with these groups in advance can provide a critical resource in an emergency.
Rh-negative blood shortages are a real and ongoing concern in the Philippines. Taking these precautions can help protect your health – and may even save a life.
