Natural Disaster Alert – Mount Bulusan at Alert Level 1
Location: Vicinity of Mt. Bulusan and High-Risk Barangays Around the Volcano
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised Mount Bulusan’s status from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1 after it erupted on June 5 at 10:37 a.m.
Mount Bulusan is an active volcano located in Sorsogon Province in the Bicol Region. It is 70 km southeast of the Mayon Volcano and approximately 600 km southeast of Manila City.
After the eruption, PHIVOLCS reported thin fine ashfall in the northwestern sector of the mountain affecting barangays of Puting Sapa, Añog, Guruyan, Catanusan, Buraburan, Bacolod, and Sangkayon in the city of Juban and Bolos in the city of Irosin, which are all within Sorsogon Province. Rumbling sounds and sulfurous odors were also reported by residents of the barangays of Añog, Guruyan, and Catanusan.
Under Alert Level 1, a 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano is established prohibiting entry and vigilance in the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) beyond that in the southeast sector is mandated due to the possibility of sudden, hazardous eruptions that may occur without warning. Local authorities conducted rescue operations in the PDZ on June 5. The Sorsogon Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reminds all travelers that hiking or tourism activity within the 4-kilometer PDZ is strictly prohibited.
