Travel Alert – Earthquakes in the Philippines

The U.S. Embassy alerts U.S. citizens to the high prevalence of earthquakes in the Philippines. As the recent magnitude 6.2 earthquake centered around the Mindoro Strait between Luzon and Mindoro Islands demonstrates, the potential for seismic activity in the Philippines is high due to its location along the so-called “ring of fire.” U.S. citizens should have a plan in place should an earthquake occur, which may result in dangerous conditions lasting several days, delays in available transportation back to the United States, and emergency or security personnel not always being readily available to assist.

If you live in or travel to the Philippines, the U.S. Embassy recommends you obtain travel insurance to cover unexpected expenses during an emergency and encourage your U.S. citizen travel companions to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Seismic events may extend the time required for a safe evacuation. Monitor local radio and media to be aware of developments. Inform family and friends of your whereabouts and remain in close contact with your tour or hotel staff, transportation providers, and local officials for evacuation instructions during an earthquake emergency. You should consider preparing for earthquakes by organizing a kit in a waterproof container that includes a supply of bottled water, non-perishable food items, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, any medications taken regularly, and vital documents (especially your passport and other identification). Emergency shelters often provide only very basic resources and may have limited medical and food supplies.

In the event of any natural disaster, the Embassy will monitor the situation in conjunction with Philippine authorities and issue disaster-specific guidance.

Actions to Take:

* Exercise extreme caution if you live within the affected areas.

* Stay calm and alert. During periods of seismic activity watch out for falling objects and stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets, and other heavy objects that may cause injury.

* Maintain awareness of conditions and avoid steep slopes.

* Monitor local media and the PHIVOLCS website for updates.

* Monitor the NDRRMC website.
